For years, I’ve dreamt about relocating.
To travel the world, change the scenery, meet new people, and shake off everything familiar and known. I talk about it endlessly. At the Friday family meals, with my best friends, at work, my colleagues know and ask, “When will you take the step?” And it’s only me who overthinks it. With the question – to go or not to go?
I’m May, Marketing manager at Hollahop. A year ago, I made the decision that changed my life. I’m here to share some of my personal experience in relocating to the best destination in Europe. I know exactly how it feels, you try to imagine what life abroad will look like, and without prior notice, the thoughts jump around and create a mess in your head. So many questions and very few answers.
- Is this the right time?
- What if it’s not for me?
- How do you maintain relationships with family and friends?
- And what happens if work doesn’t turn out the way I imagine? Lots of fears, doubts, and uncertainties.
My advice? Let’s try to think about it differently.
When I was debating whether to realize my dream of relocation, I decided to change the story I was telling myself. Instead of rushing to make declarations, and to promise myself, family, and friends that I am going and not coming back… I chose not to complicate things, I tried to simplify the idea of relocation for myself.
The truth is, moving to another country brings many changes, fears, and challenges. But if we think of it as a lifetime experience, and not a “Catholic marriage,” it might be a bit easier.
These are the questions I asked myself in order to organize my thoughts:
- Why do I dream of relocating?
- How do I imagine “a day in my life”? Write on a piece of paper what I do, where I work, what my hobbies are.
- What’s the worst thing that could happen if I realize my dream?
- A list of pros and cons.
- A list of difficulties and possible solutions to challenges I might face.
- What am I willing to do to make it happen?
The questions really helped me understand why I want to relocate, how I will deal with the difficulties and challenges, and what needs to be done for my journey to unfold in the best possible way. I built for myself a broad picture of “what if”. And it gave me some perspective for one clear insight. I can always decide that I am returning. (This goes into the answer, what is the worst thing that can happen?) I realized that I prefer to fulfill the dream and know that I tried rather than live with the knowledge that I didn’t try because fear stopped me.
I know it’s scary. I’ve been there. But for me, relocation was the best decision I ever made.
